It's been a long time since we've updated here and it's so good to post again at this site that we love!
We want to encourage you with a new prayer challenge that we've decided on.... Would you consider praying with us, with your family or alone, one meal a week? You could fast or you could just pray around meal time (or really... anything you'd like- just weekly, fervent prayer!).
Please let us know if you'd like to join us for this! If you'd like to continue with praying one day a month for the Uyghur people, that's super! Or if you might feel like you're staying more connected, more tuned in to their needs and their situation, to pray for them weekly..... please do!
During the next week I will also be working to update the prayer pages on the top of our sidebar to the right, so if you've printed those up for your Bible, perhaps you could print a new copy and keep praying that way?
Please Join Us! We are so needy for your prayers with us for the Lord to prepare the way for his salvation to come to these people, of whom there will be a great number around his throne on that day...

new things
We have been dreaming for the past few months of great new things.... mainly a sermon that has jolted us gladly, down to the core of who we are and what we are doing here. A subtle and still somehow bold new aim (approach) for ministry among Uyghurs. Acts 8. May Christ be glorified!
And there's also a list of things on our minds... we've been talking about it, adding items to our mental list that one day we'll post and share.... for sure there could be ten thousand bold new things to ask the Father to do, to build his church among the Uyghur people: specific steps forward we want to ask for and praise Him for as they come.... freedoms, voices, gatherings, art, songs, theology....
But this is a busy morning so for right now I will just share the very beginning of what we're dreaming...
Will you dream with us? Pray with us boldly for the Uyghur people!?
What if God did Such a Miracle as this? What if the government in XinJiang, in it's capital city, even coming from the national captial, would support a work of reconciliation between Han and Uyghurs.... in such a way as to give freedom to even Gospel work- Christian churches- where the races are being gathered togehter and reconciliation is sought?
No government persecution against this work!? Only the cultural forces of Islam and atheisim and secularism to tackle? What joy!
It would be as wild a wonder as the Red Sea standing up tall and it's also a huge consideration whether or not this step would even be a blessing.... becuase perhaps it's the Lord plan for blessing to let this church be planted and thrive under persecution all the way? If it is, we will honor the Lord in that. But if he just might open wide some doors.... may we never have not because we asked not!

waiting for response
Friends,
My tutor is heading back to her home province this Friday. She and I have been studying Ephesians 2 last week and this and I do so hope, so deeply yearn that she would leave town with the Gospel planted deep, a seed that will sprout in true faith soon. May it be God!
It's strange... we've been in the Word not because she told me she's hungry for God or because she believes that the Bible is the Book from God but because she's been willing to accomodate to my study plan. She's been hearing more and more about what I believe and several times in the past few weeks (we've listened to and studied lots of good material lately) she's teared up as I've explained what we believe.
But there's still very little feedback. I've asked her what she thinks and she thanked me for sharing with her. Just not much else from her....
Would you ask that the Father would open her heart with questions and answers in the last few days we have together? Or perhaps give me patience to wait on his work in her heart...
I'll try to update for how the days go... thank you dear friends

It still makes me gasp to remember this evening last week.... That I could be there for this... knelt down in the bathroom with four other women present to hear this new sister profess in Uyghur "Jesus is the Messiah, the Savior from God, and I will follow Him." She was baptized in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
We had prayed for her just before she went into the water... and I cried as I stumbled through three languages in prayer: "We're not surrounding her with our support and our joy because we believe that her life will be marked with ease and comfort now that she's following you. We believe what your Word says, that she will be persecuted and that you will be with her on that day, giving her wisdom and the words to say, being her rock to protect and defend her. We praise you God that you will not let her go, that she is safe because she is yours. And you are eternally worthy of all the suffering she might endure for your name. Keep her in You God. Make her faithful and give her the grace to stay, to stand firm in you til the end."
And now she's leaving town... heading back to her family, back to the province where she's not ready to dare bring a Bible into her father's home. But she's got it on an encrypted drive on her computer and she'll be able to read and pray through the Word.
Would you ask that the Father would give her wisdom for how, when, if to connect with a few other Uyghur believers in that city? Pray that she would be given wisdom, maturity, courage and strength as she begins her first days apart from the missionary community through whom she's come to Christ. Pray that the Lord would make her a bold ambassador of His name to her people. Pray for her protection and that she would be given wisdom to evade her family's strong pressure to yield to their plans for her to have a muslim husband. Pray for her to continue to grow in His grace and bear much fruit for his glory.
And friends.... dance with joy with us that the Lord would so kindly afford us this high privilege... that seems to be the first that our eyes have seen of many lambs ahead, to come into the True Shepherd's fold.

summer guys
A little while ago we asked for you to join us in praying for a guy that was coming to serve in this area for the summer. Well, by the grace of God we ended up with guyS.... and they've all been a blessing. We're so grateful for the arrangement between our missionary sending company and a certain Christian university where two of their top business students were chosen to come join us for a few weeks. (The whole deal was arranged pretty late in the game.... I think it was May before we were sure they were coming... and they were here early June.)
So... thank the Lord with us that these guys have come, that they've encouraged our family, that they've played such strategic roles in helping the work of missionaries who have to struggle through running businesses in foreign lands. that they've engaged with this unreached people group and will hopefully go back home changed forever and inspired to inspire others to go too...

Prayer Meeting: May 2012
Call to Prayer ~ Request for His Presence:
Psalm 66:7-8 Bless our God, you peoples, make the voice of his praise be heard, who holds our souls in life, and will not allow our feet to slip.
Worship and Thanks:
For the reminder of the Word and for living examples of the blessing of laboring in prayer...
Intercession ~ Requests:
For strength, deepening of faith in this sister who has trusted Christ
For new tutors for both of us, for increased language learning this summer and for contact with a new community of U students by these new tutors
For softening, tilling of soil in the hearts of U students in this town, our friends some of whom have heard much of the Gospel now and some new students here who may have never heard
For the Uyghur church in XinJiang.... many followers of Christ there are disconnected form other believers, pray for strength, encouragement for lonely believers,
Pray for humble, devoted-to-the-Word leadership for the small church there
Pray for courage, strength in the Spirit and wisdom to withstand persecution, to do all that they can.... to stand
Pray for boldness for the Gospel to continue to spread out from the small church of believers among the Uyghur people
Pray for our brother who is still in chains because of Christ, Alim, and for his wife and sons who are still serving him in prison and clinging to grace for their lives.
Pray for Revival.... let us approach the throne of grace boldly that we might see a great move of the Holy Spirit to pour over this whole land and draw multitudes of Uyghurs- young and old, families, singles, to himself, for his praise. Build your church Oh Lord God!
Surrender:
Our plans... where to live... move? when? what work might give us access, to who? How can we serve? Don’t let us be led by human wisdom Lord!
Assurance~ His Faithfulness, His Promises:
Revelation 7: 9-14 He will do as he has said.... the success of this work is not due to our smarts or strength but what grace that we can throw our lives into this endeavor! And oh my we invest our days and all of our whole selves wisely to his glory, for his praise!

Sin
Perhaps it's too odd to tell you that our new sister in Christ has been sharing with her other Uyghur friends about sin. Of course we all want to share with all of them about the Savior but right now, besides this one friend, I've never met a Utghur who understands sin.
For Muslims, and that means basically all Uyghurs, sin is something you do.... or cleaer still, sin is something bad people do. But yesterday I got to discuss with my precious tutor friend, K, that sin is something that is in us, even in our kids.
She tensed up noticeable at this point in the conversation.... and who wouldn't? Because if sin is something in us, then we are far less in control of doing/ not doing it. (Since the Islamic moral law is ar more doable than Jesus'- don't commit adultery vs. don't lust in your heart). If sin is something in us... if we Are Sinners... than there's really no way out except that we have a Savior. Islam decieves it's followers to say that sin (and their first idea of sin is eating pork) is something you can work hard to avoid... and if that's the case you can skip out on the Savior "option," right?
Please join us in praying for our friends here, and my dear K, who will be here any second now... that they would know the Lord's kindness in convicting them and leading them to repentance (Romans 2:4) ... and to the Savior who forgives, heals, transforms, loves.

She told me about her fiancee: "I would have always thought that he's a good guy, and I'm a good girl. But why are we fighting like this then? It's become really plain to me that we are sinners. I can see it now, so clearly, we are sinners from birth."
Who says this, who calls it a "gift of grace" to be quarreling so thickly with your fiancee that you count yourself very close to calling off your engagement? These are the words (that came with the tears) of a woman who has been changed by God.... her eyes opened to see the Gospel, her need for a Savior, her heart transformed to finally alive...
It is striking to me to see how central the doctrine of depravity has been in this friend coming to Christ. Please pray for her as she shares with others, very carefully and sensitively, about sin.

Ok... can you take 61?
This sermon is about 61 minutes long and is well worth every second.....
If you can find an hour this week, maybe tuck in with your spouse and listen together? The sermon was preached to pastors (at the Together for the Gospel Conference this month) and is titled "Divine Sovereignty: The Death Defying Fuel of Missions". We listened here last night and both woke up talking about it more.... it's stirring prayers, dreams, earnestness, urgency, passion, joy. This is the stuff that sharpens us in our own discipleship and that's the very place that our ministry comes out of, our own love for the Lord and knowledge of Him.
Here it is friends. Ligon Duncan called it the best sermon on missions he's ever heard and John Piper tweeted: “This may have been the most powerful missions message I’ve ever heard. I needed to be quiet with God.”

coming this summer...
We are delighted to get to host a guy who is coming to work with us this summer. He'll be here in just a few more weeks and we are eager to see him serve well. He's a talented guy who is passionate about reaching Uyghurs with the Gospel and we're confident he can be a blessing here but we're still wide open for what exactly we can plan for him to do!
There are several ways that he could really help along the work here. Would you ask the Father to give us wisdom and direction for what to plan for him? Please ask the Lord to prepare relationships and till hearts to receive the words that this bold young man speaks to them...

Uyghur Pop
This is just a fun one....
This cute young couple have become very popular among our Uyghur friends lately. This video is of them singing a modern Uyghur song, with some sweet traditional instruments and vocals.
Thank you for joining with us to pray that this people will come to Christ! Psalm 149:4 The Lord takes pleasure in his people and beautifies the meek with salvation. May the Uyghur people be made meek.... soft and receptive to the Gospel.... that their King may beautify them with his salvation!

unity and strategy
We are so grateful for the coordinated labors of senders/ prayers supporting us and working with us through prayer and encouragement as we work together to see churches planted among Uyghurs. Unity like this is essential in this fight!
And unity on the ground is a great need to lift up to the Lord as well. Would you please pray that the Lord would use the workers that are on the ground here together to support, sharpen and encourage each other? Sometimes we go at the work in very different ways and unity is hard to guard, but it is essential!
Recently, there have been differences discussed for opinions on ministry strategy, views of how to teach the Bible, whether we should start sharing with U friends from missionary methods that have been devised from select verses in the Quran, and when and how to train up locals for leadership in the one-day Uyghur church.
Please ask the Lord to give us wisdom according to his word to proclaim His truth clearly as we ought, and to be united after the one battle cry: to proclaim Christ crucified.... and see Him rightly praised! Pray with Jesus from John 17, and with Paul from Colossians 1:1-14.

watched and unwelcome
I wrote a little while ago about a low spot for us here. Since then (mid Feb?) the Lord has been so gracious to give us one great answer: The thesis paper that could have loomed over my husband for years has been adjusted (the requirements) and he should be able to finish, with Sovereign help, in the next 3- 4 months. But we've still been battling the blues and there's been one cloud hovering darkest.
A while ago my husband met with a local friend that he travelled with in a Uyghur area not too long ago. They were in the most densely Uyghur area of the Uyghur province... probably within a days drive from the Afghan border. And my husband just heard from this local friend that after he left that area, this local friend and his family were questioned and pressed to "betray" what this foreign friend of theirs was doing.
My husband was legit.... traveling on behalf of the company he's begun that is completely legal by government standards. But the local authorities pegged him as an missionary (what other foreigner travels here, speaking the local languages?) But he was unwelcome.
The friend also told my husband that several of the men that were their "tour guides" or drivers in that area were plain clothes police men.
We don't live inside the Uyghur province but we are pressing our way there in every way (language, business, friendships) and this kind of news hurts, discourages. Would you pray that the Lord would lift our eyes and hearts, give us dreams and vision of what He will open doors for, of where, how he will lead and protect us, protect the work? in the Word
K told me this week that she's been reading the Word in Uyghur now. She has a copy of it with her back in the dorm (she moved back there this week) and is eager to keep reading more... especially since she can only read it here. If she tried to smuggle it back to her home town it would be taken by police if found, and would cause her lots of trouble for family and culture and perhaps pseudo legal reasons. Right now, since she's still investigating Jesus and the Bible, it's not worth it to her to take it that far, like when she returns home this summer. But for now, she told me, she's very glad to be able to read it here, now.
She turned 23 recently so I mentioned to her the 23rd Psalm... and then also John 10 how Jesus is the Shepherd that lays down his life for his sheep. She's listening. Now... may the Lord give grace that her heart and soul would be soft soil, fertile ground, to "recieve with meekness the implanted word which is able to save [her] soul."
Please continue to pray as well for her boyfriend E who has heard this news too.... may he begin to wrestle with this more and more and not just push what he's hearing aside...

for us.... discouraged
It's sure not anything new, but we're battling a fair bit of discouragement.
Our family is dealing with a few kinds of very ordinary difficulties that sometimes weigh down Heavy. We've had a tough stretch with an occasionally very defiant 4.5 year old. It's still grey and nasty polluted here and we both feel like we live in endless industrial complex (buildings, cars, cement endless in every direction). I'm dealing with some health things that have just risen to the surface again. They are concerning and uncomfortable more than anything... and especially so when we have such limited health care here (almost none.) And the biggie is that my husband's degree program kind-a just sprung a requirement on him that he needs to finish before he can graduate. OH how he longs (and me too!) to be done with this program this semester.... but now there's more steps to finish- some big ugly ones- before that can happen. Might the Lord work a miracle for us so that he could find a course of research to pursue heartily, that he would be able to finish in the next 6 months?

getting deeper
Well... it's been far too long since an update here, and there is much to tell! Thank you for your prayers with us for our Uyghur friends and for our humility and wisdom to serve them well. We are so grateful for your partnership with us for God's glory!
My tutor is set to arrive any minute now and today is her birthday. This will be the first tie she's ever had a birthday party (this morning she's coming for class... but she and her boyfriend (my hubby's tutor) and another friend who she's living with during this semester break (who is a like-minded girl who is a worker like us!) will come back to our place tonight for a birthday dinner, cake and ice cream and games. I hope it's a special joy for her!
And there is lots happening in her life and heart. The friend she's living with for a few more weeks (till the dorms open again next semester) has been able to share lots with her about the Lord. K (my tutor) has been reading in the Word and on an evangelistic web site for Uyhgurs (www.injil.net - Injil means New Testament - if you have a minute, you can check this site and you'll automatically hear this language that we are studying, that we love.)
Please pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to work deep in her heart... perhaps most especially to do the work of tearing down her faith in the Koran. Right now that is still her standard of truth. K and her boyfriend and his brother have heard so much of the Gospel from us and two other misny friends in their lives now..... please continue to ask that they would all be drawn to him together, even in this time in our home today!
